Curly Hair Shampoo - Do I really need it?

Curly hair does need special hair products since it tends to be drier and more unruly than other types of hair. Here you will get a good idea of what to look for when you go shopping for styling products. Remember ingredients of a product are listed by the most amount to the least. Shampoo
Shampoo can contain harsh detergents that can be specially damaging to curly, dry hair. Try to stay away from these specific ingredients: sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Check the product label for cocamidopropyl betaine instead as this is one of the gentlest cleaners. You can also try any shampoo with wheat germ oil or olive oil. Lately I have found shampoos with decyl polyglucose which is definitely a great way to go.

Conditioners
Curly hair needs conditioners every time you shampoo and every time you even just wet your hair. Select conditioners with moisturizers, proteins, humectants and emollients.

Moisturizers will help you control your curls better and they add softness. Aloe vera, amino acids and fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol are great moisturizers. Proteins help coat the hair and protect it from damage. Wheat, wheat germ, silk and soy proteins are the most common gentle proteins in conditioners. Humectants are non-oily substances that attract moisture from the air and hold it in the hair.Ones to look for are glycerine, propylene glycol, sorbitol, and urea. Emollients soften and smooth the hair cuticle resulting in frizz free hair. Some of the best ones to look for are shea butter, wheat germs and oils. Styling Product
The best styling product for curly, dry hair is gel. Gel works better than pomades, waxes or styling creams which can give you the stiff crunchy look. Look for a clear gel that does not contain alcohol which is very drying.
