Chic French women do not wear makeup. At least, they would like to appear as if they don't. The goal is to glow, with highly polished skin and almost invisible pores. "Le bare face," French Elle describes it, touting nude, slightly shimmering skin as the new "it thing" in the beauty front. The key to the French's le no makeup look? Good foundation.

A Little Goes a Long Way
Foundation, when chosen and applied correctly, gives skin a dewy glow or a soft matte finish that is completely natural and refreshing to look at. When it comes to foundation makeup, however, minimization is key. Many women make the classic mistake of using too much foundation. This makes skin appear streaked and pasty, and they end up looking like they slapped dough onto their faces.

Foundation Types
There are many types of foundation, in as many colors and ingredient variances. There's cream powder that comes with good masking abilities; thick cream foundation, used for denser coating and is recommended for heavy use in winters; foundation mousse and liquid foundation which provide a light, semi-transparent effect; mineral foundation, which is celebrated for its healthy components; and the tone cream-stick, which is perfect for uneven skin with obvious imperfections but accentuates wrinkles and crow's feet.

Color-corrective Foundation?
Then, there's color corrective foundation makeup, which can be worn under normal to change the skin tone. It's highly effective at boosting your color or toning down redness. Lavender foundation rejuvenates sallow skin, and perks up tired eyes. Green foundation tones down rosiness, and is perfect for those who blush almost as often as they breathe. Apricot foundation, on the other hand, is a great beauty enhancer, particularly during winter when dull skin needs a subtle glow. Meanwhile, if you need to look all cute and goddess-like for a special night out, try white makeup for an eye-catching glow. And no, you won't glow in a glow-worm way.

Remember, good makeup is one that looks like you've gone out au naturelle. Beauty should appear natural, not contrived. After all, to borrow the words of Yves Saint Laurent, "The most beautiful makeup for a woman is passion." I agree! Passion is the most beautifying of them all. Cosmetics, however, are easier to come by.
